Edward Marston explained to DoN why he was so happy about the painting in the window of Gallery Twenty-Two, “Schuylkill Expressway belongs in the window because it belongs in Philadelphia, it’s local. And it shows the freight trains and the Schuylkill Expressway in twilight and it brings home what I feel about that area. “  DoN asked if Marston was intentionally tapping into the market for Philadelphia art or if it was a more personal painting?  “I’ve been coming to Philadelphia since I was a kid, I grew up in the suburbs but it’s been my main destination as far as urban goes. And I think it’s absolutely a lovely city and fascinating architecture and every time I turn around I see something new.  Almost all of the paintings are plein air or draw first plein air and I use drawings as a reference.  None of them are photographic renderings.” 

DoN inquired how Edward Marston feels about being a landscape painter in the 21^st Century?  “This is what I do.  They’re landscape paintings but they’re not an idyllic trip to the past.  I think a lot about these paintings and they all comment on the contemporary scene, I’m aware of what I’m doing. When I paint something that’s coming apart, it’s something that maybe shouldn’t be coming apart or it’s a comment on a thing that shouldn’t be.  Old roads, that you wouldn’t know was a road; I recognize them as ancient roads and everything resonates as far as I’m concerned, it’s all today.”

Matthew Ostroff is like a graffiti artist using wheat paste and torn paper the way a tagger over-writes earlier tags.  But Ostroff doesn’t deface property, he confines his low-fi technique of pasting painted colored paper onto a painting background then tearing away the paper like old posters shredded on a South Street Wall.  The deep layers of color, intense saturation and feeling of the hand emanates from the surface in perfect abstract expressionism.   Curator Jt Christensen is an interior architect who has transformed the old storefront at 333 South Twentieth St. Philadelphia into a hip, aspirational showcase for art, furniture and chic urban style.  The Ostroff show with big, bold contemporary art pairs with the modern and mid 20th Century classic furniture in a hip, clean living space vibe gallery, emblematic of the changes taking place along 20th Street, offering a street view tableau of cool desirable furnishings.

Brian Lauer was the featured artist at studio christensen for June but Jt decided to keep many of them because they just look so damn good.  DoN noticed them while we discussed Ostroff’s work and thought they were paintings, from the street they read as paintings but on closer inspection the detail emerges from the color and a photograph coalesces.  The photo above is Jesus being made up as a Zombie at Tattooed Mom’s on South Street, the chiaroscuro of light across Jesus’ wounds is like a Rubens.  The photo below are guys standing along the river in Camden but feels like some Nordic outpost with sad characters staring to sea but it’s just folks enjoying the view of a blizzard on the Delaware River.

Anna Shukeylo @ Prelude Gallery

Prelude Gallery is dedicated to promoting emerging artists in a gallery setting.  DoN talked with Creative Director Gaby Heit about their mission and she explained how the gallery is collaborating with art schools to help under-grad and master level artists have opportunities to get their work seen.  Heit said the neighborhood has been very welcoming, the gallery a perfect addition to the hip restaurants, salons and shops - Pamcakes is their neighbor, Yum!  July 1st was Prelude Gallery’s soft opening but look for new work for the Second Friday art crawl on August 12th.

Gaby asked DoN what his favorite paintings are, a tough question since it was his first visit but Christopher Enty’s portraits of urban youth stand out with a rough beauty that is almost brutal.  The characters in Enty’s paintings express the self consciousness of youth in a socially networked society where a profile is suddenly important, revitalizing the significance of portraiture; Heit confided in DoN she felt Christopher Enty is Prelude Gallery’s Soutine.

Gaby Heit expressed to DoN she thought the revitalization of the 20th Street Corridor was coming from the North, the Rittenhouse Square district, but DoN explained how the Beauty Shop Cafe staked out the corner of 20th and Fitzwater Streets when there were still gangs hanging on the corner.  And now students and young professionals make the trek to Center City from GHo all the way from Washington Avenue and get their morning coffee at the corner cafe.  Art shows were part of the Beauty Shop Cafe plan from the beginning and the current show is really good.

Caitlin Beattie is an emerging artist photographer, this is her first art show.  It is so gratifying to know that artists have showcases like The Beauty Shop, Prelude Gallery and studio christensen to exhibit their work where it can really be seen by a lot of people but it makes the neighborhood so much more vibrant, intellectual and welcoming, too.

Jewelry and etchings by Kenzie Gemz.  The Beauty Shop looks like an old library or museum with terrariums, collections and photos creating a vibe of a secret society meeting room.  As the GHo neighborhood transforms with modern new houses wedging between old row-homes, young families with strollers, hipsters with porkpie hats and folks who have long lived in the neighborhood are now enjoying a renaissance of sorts along 20th Street helping to delineate a terrific art crawl up 20th, across Walnut Street to Sande Webster, down 22nd Street to Twenty-Two Gallery and on to 21st & Pine and the fabulous Gallery 339.  Second Friday, now a Center City West tradition, is August 12th.

Investigating the super structure of her surroundings, Jessica Barber has discovered a hidden beauty in the ugly encroachment of the industrial complex we live in.  The harsh angles and abrupt interruptions in the landscape are the leaping off points for Barber’s intense paintings and prints.  There is no secret that her endeavor for this show was about industriousness whether in her complex lithographs, an artistic technology unto itself, thickly painted industrial landscapes or thoughtful, contemplative figures, the effect is serious yet hopeful insight.  Seeing the beauty in the ugly is something we have to live with anyway, Jessica see’s the blight and decides to make something beautiful, deep and lasting for us, capturing the moment when the sun hits the bridge at just the right angle or the soft glow of oily asphalt at sunset.  There may be no right answer to the ugliness but Jessica is willing to look hard and see the wonderful patterns, colors and textures inflicted on the industrial landscape and offer answers in the form of art.

Abandoned Conrail Railroad Car, Bonnie Schorske, 2010 @ Twenty-Two Gallery.

Bonnie Schorske travels a lot, in her current solo show she compares and contrasts two parts of the world, the Susquehanna Valley region and India.  Bonnie told DoN she is inspired by the imagery she finds along the Pennsylvania river country, the solarized photograph of a Texaco gas pump is a real time trip, just as her duo-tone photo of an Indian landscape takes the viewer on a journey to a foreign place.  The show hangs like a road map around the world, each photo a contemplative gaze on typography, architecture and nature specific to somewhere special.  Bonnie Schorske has been in a creative frenzy producing a large stash of archival digital prints on lustrous museum quality rag paper; the photographer has found a way to produce affordable, high quality prints with DIY industriousness.  Bonnie is highly skilled as a traditional wet dark room photographer but her transition to digital proves it’s not the camera equipment but the eye of the artist that makes an image work.

This is the image Bonnie used on her art card, when DoN saw Bonnie at the recent Piffaro concert she asked if he was attending her upcoming show - DoN drew a total blank, even though he had the card propped up against his monitor, he never turned it over to see who’s card it was, the image had sold itself already.

Dale Levy, Perception @ Twenty-Two Gallery.

Tonight is the Center City Art Crawl but last Friday DoN attended the opening reception for Dale Levy’s Perception one-person show at Twenty-Two Gallery.  Dale told DoN that Helen Frankenthaler is an influence for her abstract expressionist paintings; the wild colors which appear so immediate actually takes a lot of time as each color dries before the next is added.

At the opening party a group of Dale Levy’s college girl friends were snapping pictures and hanging out with their old friend in support of her great artistic achievement.  Encouragement and persistence is so essential to an artist’s ability to persevere.  Dale Levy has developed her own recognizable style that looks back to the invention of abstraction but with a contemporary palette and stylish presence.  Make 22nd Street part of your art crawl tonight.

Harry Boardman’s collection of art for his one man show is not narcissistic in the least, he really has the painting skill to claim his artistic turf, desirable works of art to elevate your life-style, like a Philly MC at a rap battle - Holla Back!

Dale Levy @ Twenty-Two Gallery.  Dale Levy was on duty for the artist run space, she currently has not just the bold abstracts she’s known for but beautiful representational paintings which display a different facet of her style.  The group show represents the work of influential Philadelphia artists who contribute to the artistic zeitgeist of the region with exuberant enthusiasm and tenacity.

Every time DoN walks down 22nd Street, a feeling of well-being emanates from the neighborhood, it’s so pretty, so accessible and friendly with cafe’s, shops and art.  Even though a couple of cool spots have closed due to this stupid recession the stroll feels very Metropolitan; DoN recently had coffee @ Good Karma to talk with a prominent Philadelphia blogger about some exciting upcoming news, even the gossip is esoteric.

Karen S. Davies like cities but she likes the country better, she’s obsessed with patterns of foliage, light & darkness, the movement of water like in the back bays and marshlands of the Jersey Shore. To Davies the winding paths through the deep grasses have their own personalities, she emphasizes aspects of the natural world on the surface of her mixed media pieces.

The large works incorporate unusual yet common materials to create what Paul DuSold called a “…cosmic suggestiveness that comes through as very satisfying.”  Stop in Twenty-Two and ask Karen what the secret ingredients are that make the heroic pieces glow.

Lauren Sweeney edited her display of art for the Philadelphia Open Studio Tour so visitors could get a good grasp of her style.  Lauren is a member artist of Gallery Twenty-Two and has established herself as one of Philly’s finest watercolorists, her prints and giclee’s are high quality and affordable.  Sweeney’s studio was DoN’s first stop on an art crawl through Center City West last weekend; this weekend is POST East of Broad Street.

Twenty-Two Gallery smartly participated in the annual open studio tour allowing art lovers to discover this gem of a gallery on 22nd Street; Derek Jecxz’s large format prints are exquisite.  Jecxz is a new member of the Twenty-Two Gallery.

Jacque Liu @ Area 919 in Cityspace @ 22nd & Chestnut Streets.  Michael Garden of Area 919 is hosting Liu’s “drawings” made of folded mylar creating enlarged architectural details which meld beautifully into the fabulously ornate interior of the luxurious office space - Jacque Liu’s: An Abstraction of Details is on exhibit through 11/13/10.

Moe Brooker @ Sande Webster Gallery @ 2006 Walnut Street, Philadelphia.  Moe Brooker’s bold, big abstractions look fantastic in the large main gallery space, it was a nice respite to sit in the quiet gallery and take in the stunning array of masterworks before setting out to see more studios. Charles Kalick is in the salon gallery.

Of course, DoN Brewer had to stop by Bonte’s Cafe @ 17th & Sansom Streets to check out his own one-person show of photographs called Dark Matter - a Photographic Society of Philadelphia event through 10/13/2010.  The space offers PSoP members the opportunity to display their own work as long as it fits the 16 x 20″ format, the warm toned walls and intimate space is a perfect accent for the art work.

DoN’s last stop of the day was at #1 on the Center City POST list - Jerry DiFalco and his etching filled studio.  The bright room on the 9th floor is jammed with fabulous etchings for which DiFalco has gained wide-spread notoriety, the quality of his work is timeless and ethereal.

Jerry DiFalco is well known for his liturgical art which graces many places of worship; as the sun set over the Schuylkill River the light poured over the large golden painting in DiFalco’s studio while Jerry and DoN chatted about DiFalco’s true passion - teaching art.  Jerry told DoN he was inspired by his visit to DoN’s place last year - such a great compliment assures DoN will participate in next year’s tour.

Reta Sweeney’s Passages in Paint exhibit at Twenty-Two Gallery includes several paintings from a trip to an island off Puerto Rico as a guest of Glenn Curry, editor of Art Matters Magazine.  The deal was to help spruce up a guest house and then have time to paint, a cool gig especially when your friends like Doris Peltzman, Betz Green, Barbara Keogh and others are there to help.  The glow of light in her tropical paintings is a lively counterpoint to the woodsy East Coast landscapes.  The body of work on display pays tribute to Sweeney’s trained eye and finely skilled hand, just beautiful.

The Second Friday art crawl in Center City offers several destinations, Twenty-Two Gallery consistently presents interesting installations featuring local artists. Reta Sweeney’s drew a crowd of Philly artists and friends in support of her one-woman show of  paintings; Reta’s core group of friends are all dedicated artists who enjoy taking trips to study and paint.  Diane Podolsky curated the show with Shawn Murray, the installation is subtle yet utilizes and activates as much space as possible, even hanging paintings back to back in the window.

Valerie Carroll, Spot @ Twenty-Two Gallery.

Valerie Carroll’s animistic portraits of cats & dogs practically growl with aggression, daring DoN to stare down scary faces like monsters in a dream.  Sometimes when DoN looks into KaTy the ArT DoGs eyes he feels a connection with her like some extrasensory perception mind meld is happening, Carroll’s paintings tap into that same vibe.  Carroll’s animal portraits are classic mise en scene animal portraits yet brutalist and difficult like a great punk rock song.

Valerie Carroll explained how she first got this impression of the bathing man while out West but finished the painting back East.  The painting pulses with emotion, the man’s facial expression roils with desperation, the luxury of a bath too sad to believe, a beard grown wild, a rusted basin a momentary respite from the New Great Depression.

Shawn Murray, Twenty-Two Gallery’s mastermind, warned Adrienne Jenkins that portraits are a hard sell but her paintings of twenty-somethings reveal such a current state of being for young people - harried, a bit grim, self absorbed like characters from a William Faulkner novel set in the future - that it makes DoN glad she ignored his advice, the portraits are so painterly they don’t read as so specific.

Twenty-Two Gallery’s co-curator , Diane Podolsky, has the balls to mix up impressionist still life paintings with stylized portraits and crazed pet paintings & makes it work like some museum show of the history of modern art; paintings just never go out of style.

Valerie Carroll & Adrienne Jenkins at the opening of their show, Light and Despair @ Twenty-Two Gallery during West Center City’s Second Friday art crawl.  The two artists paint together at Wayne Art Center , sharing studio space and creating a kind of cross-pollination of painting styles.  With 25 or so paintings, this is a big show for two artists but Adrienne Jenkins is preparing for her solo show next year for the same space; the two artists have joined the artist collective and you can meet them this Sunday afternoon at Twenty-Two Gallery, 236 South 22nd Street.
